Maxspect TrueReef Filter Lens
The Maxspect TrueReef Filter Lens is a magnetic reef photography filter lens for iPhone, designed to help you capture coral colours the way they look in person. It suits reef keepers who want vibrant, balanced aquarium photos without losing the fluorescent glow that makes corals stand out.
Why It Is Different
Standard acrylic filter lenses often overcorrect aquarium lighting, cutting too much blue and stripping out the brilliant fluorescence that makes corals look so alive. The TrueReef lens uses a blue monomer coating that selectively reflects harsh high-energy visible (HEV) blue light while preserving near-UV fluorescence. The result is vibrant, balanced photos that look true to what your eyes see at the tank.
Key Benefits
- Filters harsh blue light without dulling the "pop" of coral colours
- True-to-life colour without a flat, oversaturated look
- Preserved coral fluorescence and vivid detail
- Cleaner contrast between corals and background rock
- Attaches magnetically to the back of the phone for quick, frame-free shots
- Precision optical glass in a durable aluminium alloy body
How It Works
Traditional yellow or orange acrylic lenses block large portions of the blue spectrum (400–480 nm). This often removes the very wavelengths that produce coral fluorescence. The TrueReef lens reflects a portion of HEV light instead of simply absorbing it. This keeps the delicate near-UV glow (around 420 nm and below) intact.
How to Use
- Snap the lens magnetically onto the back of your iPhone 12 or newer model, over the camera
- Hold the camera perpendicular to the glass
- Turn off ambient room lights
- Keep auto white balance ON
- Reduce the deep/royal blue and cool white channels on your aquarium light, and increase warm white
Choosing Between the Two Lens Tints
- Gouda Lens (Yellow): allows some of the violets and blues to get through, for a more subtle correction.
- Sunset Boulevard Lens (Orange): filters out all the violet, blue and cyan. It is better for setups with heavy blue lighting.
Suitable For
- Reef aquarium owners photographing corals under blue-heavy LED lighting
- Hobbyists who want to share, document or sell coral frags with colours that match what they see in person
Compatibility
- Magnetically attaches to iPhone 12 and later
- Covers more than 90% of current Apple devices

Frequently Asked Questions
Which iPhones does the TrueReef Filter Lens fit?
It attaches magnetically to iPhone 12 and later models, which covers more than 90% of current Apple devices.
How is this different from a standard yellow or orange acrylic lens?
Traditional acrylic lenses absorb large portions of the blue spectrum (400–480 nm), which can remove the wavelengths behind coral fluorescence. The TrueReef lens uses a blue monomer coating to reflect a portion of HEV light instead, keeping the near-UV glow around 420 nm and below.
Should I choose the Gouda (yellow) or Sunset Boulevard (orange) lens?
The Gouda lens lets some violet and blue through for a more subtle correction. The Sunset Boulevard lens filters out all the violet, blue and cyan, so it is better suited to tanks with heavy blue lighting.
How should I set my aquarium lights for the best photos?
Reduce the deep/royal blue and cool white channels and increase warm white. Also turn off ambient room lights.
What phone settings and technique work best with this lens?
Keep auto white balance ON and hold the camera perpendicular to the glass.
What is the lens made from?
It is made from precision optical glass housed in a durable aluminium alloy body.
