Powerhead or cross-flow pump?
Propeller powerheads such as the AI Nero provide broad flow that you can direct where it is needed. Cross-flow and gyre designs, such as Red Sea ReefWave and Maxspect MJ-GF, offer a different flow pattern for circulating water across the aquarium. Tank shape, rockwork and pump placement all affect coverage.
Match the pump to your tank

Size and flow: check the recommended tank dimensions and flow range in litres per hour (L/h). Maximum output alone does not tell you whether a pump suits your fish, corals or plants.

Livestock: choose flow suited to your inhabitants. A small freshwater aquarium or fish that prefer gentle movement may not need additional circulation beyond the filter outlet.

Mounting: check the magnet's supported glass thickness, the space available and access for cleaning.

Positioning and everyday use
Follow the manufacturer's installation guidance. Where output is adjustable, start low and observe the flow around your aquascape. Reposition or reduce it if sand is being displaced or livestock struggles against the current. Keep intakes clear and clean the pump as directed.
Does a wave maker replace a filter or return pump?
No. A wave maker circulates water inside the display tank; an aquarium filter provides filtration, while a suitable return pump moves water back from a sump. Choose each for its role.
