Description

Seachem deNirate

Seachem deNirate filter media is a natural, highly porous biological filtration medium for aquarium keepers who want to support nitrate reduction alongside nitrification. It promotes aerobic nitrification near the surface and anaerobic denitrification deeper within its pore structure, helping to process ammonia, nitrites, nitrates and organics in aquarium water.

Key Benefits

  • High-porosity biological media with pore geometry suited to anaerobic bacteria.
  • Supports aerobic bacteria in the outer few millimetres and anaerobic denitrifying bacteria in the core.
  • Removes nitrate primarily through anaerobic denitrification rather than limited nitrate trapping capacity.
  • Provides a large surface area for a high density of beneficial bacteria.
  • Does not carry the hydrogen sulphide production concern associated with sulphur-based media.
  • Can also function as an effective aerobic biological filter at higher flow rates.

How to Use

Rinse off dust before use. Place Seachem deNirate where aquarium water is forced through the media, such as in a canister filter, chemical filtration module or box filter. Avoid excessive water flow, as this can restrict the low-oxygen environment needed for denitrifying bacteria to develop.

Dosage

Use 500 mL for approximately 100–200 L (25–50 US gallons), depending on the starting nitrate concentration and current biological load. Use enough media to remove nitrate at least as quickly as it is produced. If nitrate is initially very high, reduce it to below 20 mg/L with water changes before using the media.

Compatibility

Suitable for drip trays, canister filters, sumps and box filters. For nitrate reduction through both aerobic and anaerobic processes, keep flow below 200 L (50 US gallons) per hour; at flow below 50 US gallons per hour, it functions as both an aerobic and anaerobic biological filter. At flow above 100 US gallons per hour, it functions solely as aerobic media. Where higher flow is unavoidable, Seachem Matrix or Pond Matrix is recommended by the manufacturer.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Seachem deNirate remove from aquarium water?
It supports the removal of nitrates, nitrites, ammonia and organics through aerobic nitrification and anaerobic denitrification processes.

What flow rate should I use for nitrate reduction?
Water flow should not exceed 200 L (50 US gallons) per hour. Slower flow, below 50 US gallons per hour, allows both aerobic and anaerobic bacterial activity.

Will deNirate lower very high nitrate levels immediately?
If nitrate is very high, first lower it to below 20 mg/L with water changes. After several days of use, nitrate should begin falling and gradually level off at about 4–5 mg/L as nitrate.

Does Seachem deNirate need replacing?
It is biological media and does not exhaust over time, but pores can become less efficient if clogged by detritus or slime. Prefiltering with a sponge or filter floss can extend its useful life.

Should I choose deNirate or Matrix for my aquarium filter?
deNirate is suited to systems specifically focused on nitrate removal with suitably low flow and sufficient existing aerobic biomedia. Matrix is better suited where a multipurpose biological medium is needed or flow cannot be kept below 50 US gallons per hour.
