API Melafix All-Natural Antibacterial
API Melafix All-Natural Antibacterial is a fish remedy for treating bacterial infections in freshwater aquariums, including open wounds, tail rot, eye cloud and mouth fungus, while supporting regrowth of damaged fins and tissue. It suits hobbyists dealing with a suspected infection, and anyone who wants to ease newly bought fish through the move from store to home.
Key Benefits
- Natural antibacterial treatment for external bacterial infections in fish, such as fin rot and open wounds
- Targets common problems including open wounds and abrasions, tail rot, eye cloud and mouth fungus, as well as fin and tail rot, popeye and body slime
- Promotes regrowth of damaged fins and tissue
- Can be used when adding new fish to an aquarium, particularly to smooth the transition from store to home
- Useful when an infection is suspected but not yet diagnosed. Some fish bought in pet stores already carry diseases at the time of purchase, and these can be hard to spot in the early stages.
- Will not adversely affect the biological filter, alter the pH or discolour the water
- Safe with invertebrates such as snails and shrimps, and will not harm aquarium plants
How to Use
- Disease or wound treatment: dose daily for 7 days. After 7 days, make a 25% water change. Continue treatment if necessary.
- Adding new fish: dose daily for 3 days.
- Foaming: some foaming is normal during treatment and is not harmful as long as the proper doses were given. How long it lasts depends on what is dissolved in the water. Water with a lot of dissolved organics or proteins can foam more, and for longer.
- If foaming continues for more than a week after treatment stops, do more frequent water changes and add activated carbon or Bio-Chem Zorb filtration media to remove any remaining remedy.
- Make sure protein skimmers are switched off during treatment, as they add to excessive foaming. When you restart the skimmer afterwards, it may be wise to turn its pump flow down until the remedy residues clear from the system.
Dosage
- Add 5 ml per 10 gallons of aquarium water.
Suitable For
- Fish with external bacterial infections, such as fin rot, tail rot, eye cloud, popeye, body slime, mouth fungus or open wounds
- Freshwater and saltwater aquariums. For a marine or saltwater aquarium, the manufacturer recommends dosing with API Marine Melafix instead.
- Newly purchased fish going into an aquarium for the first time
Many disease symptoms are clearly visible, such as white streaks, lesions, protruding eyes and other unusual marks or spots. Most problems fall into three categories: fungal, parasitic or bacterial. One way to diagnose is to match your fish's symptoms against the range of API fish remedies, which includes treatments for Ich, Betta fish and common symptoms such as hole-in-the-head, eye cloud and fin and tail rot.
Compatibility
- Can be used safely with all other API fish remedies and products, as long as you follow the directions for each during treatment
- Pairs with API Pimafix, a combination that is recommended for stubborn infections. Use each remedy at its recommended dose, with no need to reduce either dose.
- Avoid using more than two fish remedies at a time unless you are certain of the diagnosis of multiple ailments. This lets you tell which remedies are working when troubleshooting a stubborn symptom.
- Safe with snails, shrimps, the biological filter and aquarium plants
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use API Melafix in a freshwater tank?
Yes. It treats your fish's symptoms in both freshwater and saltwater aquariums. For marine or saltwater tanks, the manufacturer recommends API Marine Melafix.
How much do I dose, and for how long?
Add 5 ml per 10 gallons of aquarium water. For disease or wounds, dose daily for 7 days, then do a 25% water change and continue treatment if necessary. For new fish, dose daily for 3 days.
Can I treat fin rot and Ich at the same time?
Melafix targets bacterial infections such as fin and tail rot. All API remedies can be used together safely if you follow both sets of directions. Avoid more than two remedies at once unless you are certain of the diagnosis, so you can tell which one is working.
Why is my water foamy after using Melafix?
Some foaming is normal and not harmful when the correct dose is used. Water with a lot of dissolved organics or proteins foams more. If foaming lasts more than a week after you stop treatment, do more frequent water changes and add activated carbon or Bio-Chem Zorb. Keep skimmers off during treatment.
Is it safe for snails, shrimps, plants and my filter?
Yes. It is safe with invertebrates such as snails and shrimps, and it will not harm the biological filter or aquarium plants.
Can I combine Melafix with API Pimafix?
Yes, and this combination is recommended for stubborn infections. Use each at its recommended dose, with no need to reduce either one.
