Why Magnesium Matters in a Reef Tank

As corals grow, they take in calcium and carbonate ions and use them in a biological process to form their hard skeletons. Magnesium is needed to keep calcium and carbonates in solution at a super-saturated level. If you struggle to hold your alkalinity or calcium where you want them, your magnesium may be low. Bringing it up to the recommended level helps keep those two parameters in solution. Regular magnesium testing is important for any saltwater tank, and especially for coral reef tanks, alongside alkalinity and calcium checks.
