Description

Dennerle Scapers Soil

Dennerle Scapers Soil is an active aquarium substrate for planted tanks. It softens the water and makes it slightly acidic, which supports strong plant growth and suits tropical fish and shrimp. It is designed for aquascapers, planted-tank hobbyists and shrimp keepers across South Africa who want a nutrient-rich, natural-looking base that also improves water conditions.

Dennerle developed Scaper's Soil specifically for aquaria. It recreates the soft, slightly acidic water that most tropical animals and plants live in, which is why it works best in plant aquaria, especially aquascaping layouts and shrimp tanks. The soil is made from up to 100% natural raw materials, blended from carefully chosen natural soils including fertile volcanic soil. It supplies the essential minerals and trace elements that aquarium plants need every day.

Key Benefits

  • Nutrient substrate for strong plant growth: Contains all essential minerals and trace elements, giving roots a steady daily supply of what they need.
  • Fertile volcanic soil: Part of a natural soil blend that gives plants a rich, productive rooting medium.
  • Actively creates soft, slightly acidic water: Brings water to approx. pH 6–6.5 and KH 0–2 °d.
  • Bio-filtering function: Helps keep water healthy and clear.
  • Twice-baked granules: The baking process gives the grains lasting water stability, so they hold their structure over time.
  • Valuable humic and fulvic acids: The soil releases these naturally and does not discolour the water.
  • Special nutrient formula: Formulated so that it does not promote algae.
  • Ideal in combination with CO2 fertilisation: A strong partner for high-growth planted setups.
  • Suitable for bottom filters: A popular combination for shrimp breeding.

Natural look and healthy roots: The grains are irregularly shaped and 1 to 4 mm (approx. 0.04–0.16") in diameter, which gives the substrate a particularly natural appearance. The loose structure lets water flow well through the substrate, and plant roots can grow into it easily. Scaper's Soil gives plants a good basis for healthy, strong growth and vibrant colours. Mosses benefit too, showing compact growth and rich green leaves. The deep black colour creates a more intense, vivid contrast with the bright green of your plants, which is a big plus for aquascape presentation.

How Scaper's Soil helps prevent algae: The substrate works against algae growth in three ways:

  • Special nutrient formula: The nutrients mainly benefit the plants rather than the algae.
  • Nutrient buffer function: It works like a battery. Surplus nutrients are taken up from the water and only released to the plants when needed.
  • Strong promotion of plant growth: Healthy, fast-growing aquatic plants are the strongest natural competitors of algae.

Water chemistry through ion exchange: Scaper's Soil has active ion exchange properties. It lowers the pH and stabilises it at a slightly acidic level of approx. 6.0–6.5. It also reduces carbonate hardness, down to close to 0 °d KH depending on the water source, which makes the water considerably softer. Results vary with your starting tap water, and water supplies differ from region to region in South Africa. The soil also releases humic and fulvic acids without tinting the water. Together, these effects create the water values that many tropical plants and fish know from their natural habitats.

Crystal clear water and biological filtration: The porous surface of each grain gives beneficial cleansing bacteria an ideal place to settle. In effect, the entire substrate becomes a huge biofilter, supporting effective biological self-cleaning and the best possible water quality. The soil also absorbs many harmful substances directly from the water, helping to maintain clear water and healthy living conditions.

Suitable For

  • Planted aquaria, especially aquascaping layouts.
  • Plants, fish and shrimp that need soft, slightly acidic water.
  • Most South American ornamental fish, such as neon tetras, scalars (angelfish) and discus, which do well in soft, slightly acidic water.
  • Mosses, which respond with compact growth and rich green leaves.
  • Keeping and breeding shrimp species that need slightly acidic water, such as Crystal Red and Red Bee.

A substrate built for shrimp: Its pH- and KH-lowering properties and excellent filter capacity make Scaper's Soil an ideal substrate for keeping and breeding soft-water shrimp. The loose yet stable structure keeps the substrate well supplied with oxygen, so decomposing matter does not build up. The highly porous surface is an excellent home for the microorganisms that baby shrimp need for their development. Shrimp colours also stand out well on this substrate: white, red and yellow shrimp contrast vividly against the dark black background.

Compatibility

  • CO2 fertilisation: Even in very soft water, Scaper's Soil is safe to use with CO2 injection because the soil stabilises the pH.
  • Bottom filters: The grains stay stable over the long term, so the soil works especially well with bottom filters, a good combination for shrimp breeding. Running a bottom filter brings the water to ideal values even faster and increases the filter capacity.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will Dennerle Scapers Soil lower the pH and hardness of my tap water?
Yes. Through ion exchange it brings the pH to approx. 6.0–6.5 and lowers carbonate hardness to between 0 and 2 °d KH. How close it gets to 0 °d depends on your water source, so results can vary with local municipal supplies.

Can I run CO2 injection with such soft water?
Yes. Dennerle states that Scaper's Soil is safe to use with CO2 fertilisation because the soil itself stabilises the pH. It is described as ideal in combination with CO2.

Is it a good substrate for Crystal Red and Red Bee shrimp?
Yes. It was designed with soft-water shrimp in mind. It lowers pH and KH, has a strong filter capacity, supports the microorganisms baby shrimp need, and its black colour makes white, red and yellow shrimp stand out.

Will this soil cause algae because it is nutrient-rich?
Its special nutrient formula is designed not to promote algae. Nutrients mainly benefit plants, surplus nutrients are buffered out of the water and released only when needed, and strong plant growth helps outcompete algae.

Does Scaper's Soil turn the water brown?
No. It releases humic and fulvic acids naturally but does not discolour the water. Its porous grains act as a biofilter and absorb harmful substances, helping to keep water crystal clear.

Can I use it with an undergravel or bottom filter?
Yes. The twice-baked grains stay stable over the long term, making the soil especially well suited to bottom filters. This combination adjusts water values more quickly and increases filter capacity, which is popular for shrimp breeding.
