Description

Filterwool 1kg

DARO Filterwool 1kg is aquarium filter wool that traps fine particles and helps keep aquarium water clean and clear. It suits any fishkeeper who wants sparkling water, from beginners setting up their first tank to hobbyists running external canister filters. The 1 kg (2.2 lb) supply lets you pack your filter generously and still have fresh wool ready for replacements.

Filter wool is one of the most important media in any filtration system. It is often overlooked in favour of biological and chemical media, but it is the layer that catches the finest debris before it can drift back into your aquarium. DARO recommends adding filter wool to all types of filters, especially external filters, where it works as the final polishing stage.

Key Benefits

  • Traps fine particles that would otherwise make their way back into your aquarium.
  • Helps keep aquarium water clean and clear between maintenance sessions.
  • Works as the last, topmost layer of your filter media, giving the water a final polish.
  • Suitable for all types of filters, and especially effective in external filters.
  • Gives a few uses before it needs replacing, so you get good value from each batch.
  • Shows you when it needs replacing: once it no longer springs back to its original shape after cleaning, it's time for fresh wool.
  • Can turn a second filter into a dedicated water polisher when that filter is loaded with filter wool alone.

How to Use

  • Position it last: Place the filter wool as the final layer in your filter, which is the top one. Water passes through it last, so fine particles are caught before the water returns to the tank.
  • Use plenty: Filter wool only works properly when enough of it is used. Pack it in as much as possible rather than adding a thin, loose layer.
  • Clean and reuse: You can usually get a few uses out of the wool by cleaning it before it needs throwing away and replacing with fresh wool.
  • Replacement interval: As a guide, keep the wool in your filter for around 3 weeks.
  • Know when to replace it: If the wool doesn't bounce back to its original shape after cleaning, replace it with fresh wool.
  • Running two filters? Load one of them with only filter wool. Doing this gives a strong polishing effect and noticeably cleaner water.

Suitable For

  • All types of aquarium filters.
  • External filters in particular, where filter wool is especially recommended as the top media layer.
  • Aquarists running two filters who want to set one up as a dedicated wool-only polishing filter.
  • Pond keepers looking for fine filter media. This product is also stocked in our pond media range.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where should filter wool go in my filter?
It should be the last layer, which means the top one. Placing it there lets it catch any fine particles before the water flows back into your aquarium.

How much filter wool should I use?
Use a lot. Filter wool works properly only when enough of it is used, so pack it into the filter as much as possible.

How often should I replace filter wool?
As a guide, keep it in your filter for around 3 weeks. You can usually clean and reuse it a few times before it needs replacing with fresh wool.

How do I know my filter wool is worn out?
After cleaning, check whether it bounces back to its original shape. If it stays flat or compressed, it's time to replace it.

Can I use filter wool in my external canister filter?
Yes. Filter wool should be added to all types of filters, and it is especially recommended for external filters.

I run two filters on my tank. How can filter wool help?
Fill one of the filters with only filter wool. This gives a strong polishing effect and leaves the water noticeably cleaner.
