Description
Hanna HI713 Phosphate Low Range Colorimeter Fresh and Marine Checker
Hanna HI713 Phosphate Low Range Colorimeter Fresh and Marine Checker is a pocket-sized digital phosphate tester for fast, accurate on-the-spot readings in freshwater and marine aquariums. It is built for South African fishkeepers and reef hobbyists who want a precise, easy-to-read phosphate result without guessing at colour charts. Clear digital digits take the uncertainty out of testing, which helps anyone with poor eyesight or difficulty telling subtle colour changes apart.
Key Benefits
- Digital accuracy instead of colour matching: Large, easy-to-read digits replace the shade comparisons used in traditional chemical test kits.
- Low-range sensitivity: Measures phosphate from 0.00 to 2.50 ppm (mg/L) at a resolution of 0.01 ppm (mg/L) across 250 points. That makes it well suited to tracking the low phosphate levels many aquarists aim for.
- Dependable precision: Accurate to ±0.04 ppm (mg/L) ±4% of reading at 25°C.
- Bridges the gap: Sits between basic chemical test kits and sophisticated professional equipment, offering laboratory-style accuracy at an affordable level.
- Dedicated to a single parameter: The checker measures phosphate only, so there are no menus or modes to work through.
- Single-button operation: One button handles both Zero and Measure.
- Battery-saving auto shut-off: The checker switches itself off after 2 minutes of non-use and after a reading.
- Truly portable: At roughly 65 g (2.3 oz), the Checker®HC fits easily in the palm of your hand or in a pocket. You can carry it between tanks, ponds-side setups or the fish room.
- Recognised method: Based on an adaptation of Standard Method 4500-P E.
- Simple power: Runs on a single AAA battery.
How to Use
Testing takes three straightforward steps:
- Step 1, Zero: Fill a clean 10 mL glass cuvette with your aquarium water sample, insert it into the checker and press the button to calibrate (zero) the instrument.
- Step 2, Add reagent: Add the HI713 powder reagent to the water sample in the cuvette.
- Step 3, Measure: Insert the vial back into the checker, press the button and read the phosphate result on the display.
For consistent accuracy, keep the vials clean. Residue, fingerprints or scratches on the glass can affect how light passes through the sample. Take the time to read the instructions and become familiar with the checker before your first test.

Frequently Asked Questions
What phosphate range does the Hanna HI713 measure?
It reads from 0.00 to 2.50 ppm (mg/L) in steps of 0.01 ppm. It is a low-range checker intended for the lower phosphate concentrations typical of well-maintained freshwater and marine aquariums.
Can I use the HI713 on both my reef tank and my freshwater aquarium?
Yes. The HI713 is suitable for both freshwater and marine aquariums, so one checker covers both setups.
How many tests do I get, and what do I need for refills?
The checker comes with 6x HI713 reagent packets. When these run out, the replacement is the HI713-25 Phosphate Checker Reagent Refill. The checker is designed to work with HANNA's powder reagents.
Will it work in a hot South African fish room or garage?
The checker operates between 0 and 50°C (32 and 122°F) at a maximum of 95% non-condensing relative humidity. Note that the stated precision of ±0.04 ppm ±4% of reading applies at 25°C.
What battery does it use, and does it switch itself off?
It runs on a single 1.5V AAA battery. It turns off automatically after 2 minutes of non-use and after a reading to save power.
Can I return the checker if it isn't right for me?
No. Because of the unique nature of this test kit, returns cannot be accepted. Please familiarise yourself with how it works before purchasing.
