Description
Hanna HI98319 Marine Salinity and Temperature Tester
Hanna HI98319 Marine Salinity and Temperature Tester is a pocket-sized digital meter that measures both the salinity and the temperature of natural and artificial seawater in aquariums. It is built for South African reef keepers and marine fishkeepers who want a quick, clear digital reading instead of squinting at a refractometer scale. Readings appear within seconds on an easy-to-read LCD screen.
Key Benefits
- Digital salinity testing by conductivity: the tester measures electrical conductivity (EC) to work out the salinity of natural or artificial seawater. This means there is no fuzzy blue line to interpret, which many hobbyists find hard to see on traditional refractometers.
- Results in seconds: salinity and temperature are measured together and shown on the LCD within moments of dipping the probe.
- Automatic temperature compensation: the tester uses its own temperature reading to correct the salinity value before displaying it. Compensation works automatically from 5 to 50.0°C (41 to 122°F), which is useful in South Africa's warm summers and cooler winters, when tank temperatures can drift.
-
Three salinity units at the press of a button: you can cycle between the three most common salinity measurements:
- ppt (parts per thousand)
- PSU (practical salinity units)
- S.G. (specific gravity)
- Graphite sensors: these reduce polarisation effects, helping readings stay consistent.
- Fast, accurate temperature readings: the tester doubles as a handy check on your heater or chiller performance.
- Selectable auto-off: the meter switches itself off to prolong battery life, giving approximately 100 hours of continuous use.
- Pocket-sized: it is easy to carry between tanks, to a fish club meeting or to your local aquarium shop when checking freshly mixed saltwater.
- Calibration solutions included: 35 ppt calibration standard sachets come in the box so you can keep readings correct from day one.
- A more stable environment for your livestock: keeping salinity steady in your reef tank lets fish and corals put their energy into growing, rather than constantly adjusting to salinity swings.
How to Use
Calibrate the tester using one of the supplied 35 ppt calibration standard sachets. The meter performs an automatic single-point calibration at 35.00 ppt. Once calibrated, place the sensor in a sample of your aquarium or freshly mixed seawater. The HI98319 measures conductivity and temperature, applies automatic temperature compensation, and displays the result on the LCD within seconds. Use the unit button to switch between ppt, PSU and S.G. to match the scale you or your salt mix instructions use. Refer to the included instruction manual for full operating and calibration steps.
Suitable For
- Testing salinity in any saltwater aquarium, including reef tanks, fish-only marine systems and coral setups.
- Measuring natural seawater as well as artificial seawater mixed from synthetic sea salt.
- Checking new saltwater before water changes, and monitoring top-off and evaporation effects.
- Hobbyists who find refractometers difficult to read or who simply want a faster, simpler testing routine.

Frequently Asked Questions
How is this different from using a refractometer?
A refractometer requires you to read where a blue line falls on a scale, and many people find that line fuzzy. The HI98319 measures electrical conductivity and shows a temperature-compensated digital value on an LCD within seconds, so there is nothing to interpret.
Which salinity units does it display?
You can cycle between ppt (0.0 to 70.0, 0.1 resolution), PSU (0.0 to 70.0, 0.1 resolution) and specific gravity (1.000 to 1.041, 0.001 resolution).
How do I calibrate it, and are calibration solutions included?
Calibration is an automatic single-point process at 35.00 ppt. Four 35 ppt calibration standard sachets are supplied in the box.
Does tank temperature affect the salinity reading?
The tester automatically compensates for temperature from 5 to 50.0°C using its own built-in temperature reading. This helps keep results comparable whether your tank runs warm in a Highveld or Durban summer or cooler in winter. Stated salinity accuracy is measured at 25°C/77°F.
What battery does it use, and how long does it last?
It runs on a CR2032 battery, which comes already installed. The battery lasts approximately 100 hours of continuous use, and the selectable auto-off feature helps stretch that further.
Can I return the tester if I change my mind?
No. Because of the unique nature of this product, returns are not accepted, so please familiarise yourself with its features and specifications before ordering.
