Why Test pH?

pH is the measure of how acidic or alkaline your pond or aquarium water is. Most fish prefer water between pH 7 and 8, and fluctuations outside these values can stress them. Testing regularly lets you spot a problem early, before it affects your fish.

There is no single correct pH for every tank or pond, because different fish species have their own preferred range. Generally the ideal value lies between 7 and 8, with some exceptions. When buying fish from your local aquatic retailer, always ask about the specific water requirements of the species you are choosing.

How to Use

Use the test tube and liquid reagents supplied to test your water. Once you have your result, here is how to respond if the pH needs correcting:

• Adjust pH slowly so you do not shock your fish. Change it by no more than 0.5 pH units per 2 days.
• If your tap water is of suitable pH, substantial water changes can correct a dangerous pH level.
• Check the KH of your pond or aquarium as well as the pH.
• For soft or aged water that has caused a low pH, pH adjusters such as NT Labs KH Buffer Up (for ponds) or NT Labs Aquarium KH Up - PH Stabiliser (for aquariums) will raise the pH.
• For fish that prefer soft, acidic water, bogwood can be used to gently lower the pH and soften the water.

• PUDO Lockers: Collect within 36 hours of receiving your collection PIN or SMS notification.

If a PUDO parcel is not collected within 36 hours, it will automatically be transferred to the nearest PUDO Kiosk or Depot at no additional cost. The parcel will then be held there for approximately 2 days before being returned.
