Description
Red Sea Reef Foundation C Magnesium
Red Sea Reef Foundation C Magnesium is a magnesium supplement for coral reef aquariums, made from a blend of magnesium salts. It helps reefkeepers maintain optimal magnesium levels and supports the stable water parameters corals need for health and growth.
Why Magnesium Matters in a Reef Tank
A successful reef aquarium depends on stable water parameters, because stability gives corals the environment they need. Every element in natural seawater plays a part, but a few have a bigger influence on overall stability. These are the foundation of the reef environment: the three major elements Calcium (Ca), Magnesium (Mg) and Bicarbonates (HCO3).
Together they affect water chemistry, including pH stability, alkalinity and seawater ionic strength. They also affect many of the coral's biological processes, including skeleton formation, ion exchange and photosynthesis. The three complement each other in building the coral skeleton. If they are not available in the correct ratios, one of them quickly becomes the limiting factor for healthy coral growth.
Key Benefits
- Maintains optimal magnesium (Mg) levels in a coral reef aquarium
- Supports the stability of the water parameters that coral health and growth depend on
- Made from a blend of magnesium salts
- Supplied as a liquid or a powder, with a dosing rate given for each
- Suits both weekly and daily supplementation routines, depending on your corals
Dosage
- Liquid: 1 ml will raise the Mg level of 100 liters by 1 ppm.
- Powder: 1 g will treat 100 liters.
How to Use
Testing is central to dosing Reef Foundation C. Always measure the foundation elements first and dose to bring them back to optimal levels.
Weekly supplementing for Soft / LPS corals
- Test the foundation elements every week.
- Dose each supplement to replenish it back to the optimal level.
Daily supplementing for SPS / LPS corals
- Make sure all the foundation elements are at optimal values.
- Run the aquarium for 4 days at a stable salinity without adding any supplements. Compensate for evaporation daily by adding freshwater.
- At the end of the 4 days, test the foundation elements and calculate the 4-day dosage of each supplement needed to replenish it back to the optimal level.
- Add the 4-day dosage to the system.
- Divide this 4-day dosage by 4 and use the result as the daily dosage for the next week.
- After a week of daily dosing, test the foundation elements again and calculate the adjusting dosage of each supplement.
- If the adjusting dosage is significantly different from the previous daily dosage, increase or decrease the daily dosage as appropriate.
- If the measured level of an element is above the optimal level, wait for the excess to be depleted before restarting daily supplementation with the amended daily dosage.
- Keep testing all the elements every week and adjust the daily dosages as required.
Good Practice
- As your corals grow, or as you add or remove livestock, the uptake of the elements in your aquarium will gradually change. Keep dosing in step with your test results.
- Keep a logbook of the weekly measurements and dosages.
- If you miss one or more days of supplementing, add the complete amount you missed. Do not exceed the maximum recommended daily increase for any of the elements.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much Reef Foundation C Magnesium raises the magnesium level?
With the liquid, 1 ml raises the Mg level of 100 liters by 1 ppm. With the powder, 1 g treats 100 liters.
How often should I test and dose if I keep soft or LPS corals?
Test the foundation elements every week and dose each supplement to bring it back to the optimal level.
How do I set up daily dosing for SPS / LPS corals?
Start with all foundation elements at optimal values. Run the tank for 4 days at stable salinity with no supplements, topping up evaporation with freshwater. Then test and calculate the 4-day dosage and add it. Divide that amount by 4 for the daily dose over the next week, then test again and adjust.
What should I do if my magnesium reading is above optimal?
Wait for the excess to be depleted before restarting daily supplementation with the amended daily dosage.
What if I forget to dose for a day or more?
Add the full amount you missed, but do not exceed the maximum recommended daily increase for any of the elements.
Why should I keep a logbook?
Coral growth and changes in livestock gradually change how quickly the elements are taken up. A log of weekly measurements and dosages makes it easier to adjust your daily dosage as your reef develops.
