Why Catfish Need a Dedicated Food

Catfish are usually shy aquarium inhabitants, and some species only come out at night. They feed in one of two ways. Some forage in the substrate. Others rasp at surfaces or use suction to pick up food. For this reason they need a food that sinks to the bottom and keeps its shape for a long time, so it is still there when they emerge to feed.

Diet also varies between species:

• Most catfish are omnivorous and eat a mix of plant and animal matter.
• Some species prefer mainly plant-based food, for example loricariids.
• Others prefer mainly animal-based food, for example Corydoras.

Sera offers three different staple foods for catfish. Each has its own composition and structure to suit these different needs. Viformo Pleco Tabs are one of the three. They combine animal proteins such as fish meal, gammarus, insect meal and krill with plant ingredients such as sea algae, spirulina, spinach and alfalfa.

How to Use

• Drop the tablets into the aquarium and let them sink to the bottom, where your catfish and loaches forage.
• Give only as much as the fish eat within a short time.
• Many catfish are shy or nocturnal. Watch how your fish feed and adjust the timing so that bottom dwellers get their share.
• Feeding only what is eaten quickly helps prevent excess food building up. This matters even more in warm South African summers, when tank temperatures rise.
