Description

Tropica 049G Tissue Culture - Staurogyne repens

Tropica 049G Tissue Culture - Staurogyne repens is a live foreground aquarium plant with a compact, bushy habit and small green leaves. It suits aquarists who want a low, fresh green carpet-style planting at the front of the tank that gradually spreads across the gravel.

Key Benefits

  • Compact, low and bushy stature of 5-10 cm (2-4"), which keeps it in the foreground.
  • Fresh green, hardy plant with small green leaves.
  • Gradually colonises gravel through horizontally creeping shoots.
  • Low light and low CO2 demand, with a medium growth rate.

About the Plant

Staurogyne repens was found in the River Rio Cristalino in the southern Amazonas. Its nearest relative in aquaristic use is Hygrophila, but Staurogyne stands apart with its marked compact, low and bushy growth and small leaves. The manufacturer gives the stem width as 3.4 cm (1.3").

How to Use

  • Plant it in the foreground of the aquarium.
  • When planting, cut off the longest upright shoots. New horizontally creeping shoots will soon form from the base of the plant and gradually colonise the gravel.
  • Under low light, growth is more upright and far fewer side shoots form. Keep this in mind if you want a spreading, bushy look.

Suitable For

  • Foreground planting in freshwater aquariums.
  • Aquascapers who want a compact, low-growing stem plant.
  • Tanks with low light and low CO2.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where in the aquarium should I plant Staurogyne repens?
In the foreground. It stays compact and low at 5-10 cm (2-4") and spreads across the gravel.

Do I need high light or CO2 for it?
No. Both its light demand and its CO2 demand are listed as low, and its growth rate is medium.

Should I trim it when planting?
Yes. Cut off the longest upright shoots when planting. New horizontally creeping shoots will then form from the base and gradually colonise the gravel.

Why is my Staurogyne growing upright with few side shoots?
At low light, growth is more upright and far fewer side shoots form.

How is it different from Hygrophila?
Hygrophila is its nearest relative in aquaristic use. Staurogyne repens is clearly more compact, low and bushy, and it has small green leaves.

Is this a real plant?
Yes. It is a live aquatic aquarium plant.
