Description

Tropica 139C Tissue Culture - Bucephalandra sp. Needle Leaf

Tropica 139C Tissue Culture - Bucephalandra sp. Needle Leaf is a slow-growing aquarium plant with green, elongated, slightly waved leaves, supplied from tissue culture in a closed cup. It suits aquarists who want a compact rhizome plant with fine texture and are happy to give it a little extra light and some added CO2.

Key Benefits

  • Fine, elongated leaves that are slightly waved and covered in numerous tiny white dots
  • Youngest parts of the rhizome show an attractive red colour
  • Slow growth, so it keeps its shape and stays compact
  • Still a very easy plant to grow, even though its demands are a bit higher than those of 'diabolica' and pygmaeae
  • Supplied as a tissue culture plant in a closed cup

About This Plant

Bucephalandras come from Asia and Anubias from Africa, but the two have a lot in common, including how they are grown. Bucephalandra sp. 'Needle leaf' has slightly higher demands than the 'diabolica' and pygmaeae types. Some added CO2 and a little more light are beneficial. Immersed leaves are green, elongated and slightly waved, with numerous tiny white dots. Each leaf is less than 0.5 cm (0.2") broad and between 1 and 2 cm (0.4–0.8") long. Growth is slow.

How to Use

  • Do not cover the creeping rhizome when planting. A covered rhizome will cause the plant to rot and die.
  • Provide a little more light than you would for the undemanding Bucephalandra types.
  • Add some CO2 to the aquarium, as this benefits the plant.

Suitable For

  • Planted freshwater aquariums where a slow-growing, fine-leaved rhizome plant is wanted
  • Aquarists who already keep Anubias or other Bucephalandra and want to try a variety with slightly higher demands

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Bucephalandra 'Needle Leaf' need CO2?
Added CO2 is beneficial, together with a little more light than the easier Bucephalandra types need. It is still described as a very easy plant to grow.

How should I plant the rhizome?
Never cover the creeping rhizome. If it is buried, the plant will rot and die.

How big do the leaves get?
Each leaf is less than 0.5 cm (0.2") broad and between 1 and 2 cm (0.4–0.8") long, so this is a fine-leaved plant.

How fast does it grow?
Growth is slow, so expect gradual development rather than quick spread.

How does it differ from 'diabolica' and pygmaeae?
It has a bit higher demands, so some added CO2 and slightly more light are recommended. It remains a very easy plant to grow.

Is this a real, live plant?
Yes. It is a live aquatic aquarium plant, supplied from tissue culture in a closed cup.
