Substrate feeding doesn't reach every plant. Mosses on hardscape, epiphytic ferns and other emersed plants often have little or no root contact with nutrient-rich soil. APT Dew feeds these plants directly through the foliage instead.

Foliar feeding is widely used in commercial horticulture. Nutrients absorbed through the leaf surface bypass the limits of roots and soil, so plants can take them up faster.
