Why Test for Ammonia?

Ammonia is the main waste product fish produce as a result of feeding. It can also be generated by the decay of uneaten food or decaying organic matter, such as plant leaves. It is extremely toxic to fish, and too much can cause major health problems. In a healthy system, the beneficial bacteria in the filter break it down into less toxic nitrite. Any ammonia reading therefore suggests something is wrong with the filtration, so test regularly.

How to Use

Use the test tube and liquid reagents supplied to test your pond or aquarium water. Then act on the result as follows:

• The correct level is zero mg/l (ppm), and it should be maintained at all times. No amount of ammonia is tolerable.
• At 0.2 mg/l (ppm), add a filter booster. NT Labs Filter Bugs is for ponds and NT Labs Filter Starter is for aquariums.
• Above 0.2 mg/l (ppm), a substantial water change is essential.
• For 0.5 – 1.0 mg/l (ppm) ammonia, change 25% of the water volume.
• For levels above 1.0 mg/l (ppm), change 50% of the water volume.
• Adding NT Labs Zeolite (ponds) or NT Labs Aquarium Ammonia Remover (aquariums) to the filter will aid in removing harmful ammonia from the aquatic environment.
• If any ammonia is found, also check other vital water quality parameters, in particular pH, KH and nitrite.
