Nitrate is produced by the beneficial bacteria in the water and in your filters as they break down the fish's toxic waste products, Ammonia and Nitrite. Unlike Nitrite, Nitrate is not typically toxic to fish. However, excessively high levels (>100mg/l) can cause problems with growth, and high levels will lead to unwanted algae growth. Testing shows you when levels are building up so you can act.
