Phosphate is a major nutrient found mainly in fish food, where it supports growth, good bone formation and many other biological processes. Fish do not use all of it, and the rest is excreted as waste. Phosphate is also produced by the breakdown of other organic matter and by natural pond processes, and it is often present in tap water too. It is beneficial to life, but only in small quantities.
