Why Algae Takes Hold in Ponds

Algae growth is promoted by high nitrate levels, phosphate from fish food, fish waste and strong or direct sunlight. This is a common problem in South African ponds that sit in full sun for much of the day. Treating the algae is only half the job. Keeping nutrient levels down through good husbandry gives the best long-term results.

How to Use

• Calculate the volume of water in your pond. Multiply the surface area (length x width, in metres) by the average depth to get the volume in cubic metres, then multiply by 1000 to get litres. In short: Length x Width x Average Depth (in metres) x 1000 = litres.
• Fill a bucket with water from the pond.
• Shake the bottle vigorously before every application.
• Pour the required amount of medication into the bucket (see Dosage below) and disperse it throughout the pond, where possible in high-flow areas.
• Repeat the treatment after 7 days if the problem persists.

Dosage

• Treatment: 10ml of medication per 380l of pond water.
• Repeat treatment: after 7 days if the problem persists, using the same dose.
• Prevention: treat the pond every 30 days at 10ml of medication per 500l of pond water, using the same procedure as the directions above.

Aeration and Heavily Green Ponds

Extremely green ponds may experience oxygen depletion after treatment. This is caused by the algae dying and decaying, so make sure the pond is well aerated during and after treatment.

• Do regular water changes of 20% to 30% every 4 to 6 weeks.
• Treat tap water with Pond Medic Anti-Chlorine water conditioner before it goes into the pond.

If a PUDO parcel is not collected within 36 hours, it will automatically be transferred to the nearest PUDO Kiosk or Depot at no additional cost. The parcel will then be held there for approximately 2 days before being returned.
