Red Sea Reef Foundation Pro Multi Test Kit
The Red Sea Reef Foundation Pro Multi Test Kit is a titration-based reef aquarium test kit for measuring Calcium, Alkalinity and Magnesium, the three elements that coral skeletons depend on. It suits saltwater hobbyists who keep corals and want accurate readings to keep these parameters in balance for coral health and growth.
Key Benefits
- Measures Calcium (Ca), Alkalinity (KH) and Magnesium (Mg) in a single kit, so you can track the basic foundation elements of coral skeletons together.
- Uses high-resolution titration tests for accurate measurements.
- Gives you the readings needed to dose the Reef Foundation supplement accurately.
- Provides 75 tests each for Calcium and Magnesium and 60 tests for Alkalinity.
Why Test for Calcium (Ca)?
A successful reef aquarium depends on water parameters that give corals a stable environment. Every element in natural seawater plays a part, but a few have an outsized effect on stability. Calcium (Ca), Magnesium (Mg) and Bicarbonates (HCO3) are the three major elements that form the foundation of the reef environment. Together they influence water chemistry, including pH stability, alkalinity and seawater ionic strength. They also influence many of the coral's biological processes, such as skeleton formation, ion exchange and photosynthesis.
Why Test for Alkalinity (KH)?
- pH is a constant concern in saltwater aquariums. Fish-only systems can tolerate a fairly wide pH range for periods of time without major harm, but reef tank occupants rely heavily on a constant pH in the right range just to survive, let alone thrive.
- The generally accepted pH range for a basic saltwater system is 7.6 to 8.4. Reef tanks are more sensitive and should be kept at the higher end, 8.0 to 8.4.
- Respiration and metabolic wastes are a natural part of the ocean. Seawater pH stays steady because the water contains natural buffers, including bicarbonate, calcium, carbonate, borate and hydroxide, which slow the drop in pH.
- When pH in a saltwater system starts to fall, it indicates that the buffers are wearing out and the increase in acidity needs to be corrected. Testing alkalinity lets you keep an eye on that buffering capacity.
Why Test for Magnesium (Mg)?
- Magnesium has many biological functions in a reef aquarium. It also helps prevent the excessive precipitation of calcium and bicarbonate, which would lower the calcium level and cause a drop in alkalinity.
- Magnesium should be maintained at approximately 3 times the level of Calcium, measured in ppm.
- Corals build approximately 90% of their skeleton by combining Ca and CO3 ions from the water to form Aragonite (CaCO3). The rest is made up of Magnesite (MgCO3), Strontianite (SrCO3), Calcite (a more brittle crystal structure of CaCO3), Fluorite (CaF2) and other minor and trace minerals.
- In unbalanced conditions, such as low levels of Mg and/or Sr, the skeleton develops with a higher proportion of Calcite. This makes it more brittle and more susceptible to damage.
Suitable For
- Reef aquariums with corals, where Calcium, Alkalinity and Magnesium need to be kept in balanced proportions.
- Reef keepers who want to dose supplements based on measured results rather than guesswork.
Compatibility
The kit lets you dose the Reef Foundation supplement accurately, which is part of the complete Red Sea reef care program.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which parameters does this test kit measure?
It measures Calcium (Ca), Alkalinity (KH) and Magnesium (Mg) using high-resolution titration tests. It does not list a separate pH test.
How many tests do I get?
The kit provides 75 Calcium tests, 75 Magnesium tests and 60 Alkalinity tests.
What ratio of magnesium to calcium should I aim for?
Magnesium should be maintained at approximately 3 times the level of Calcium, measured in ppm.
What pH range suits a reef tank?
A basic saltwater system is generally kept between pH 7.6 and 8.4. Reef tanks are more sensitive and should sit at the higher end, 8.0 to 8.4.
Why does low magnesium matter for corals?
Magnesium helps prevent the excessive precipitation of calcium and bicarbonate, which can lower calcium and cause alkalinity to drop. Low Mg and/or Sr can also lead to a skeleton with more brittle Calcite, which is more susceptible to damage.
Can I use it alongside the Reef Foundation supplement?
Yes. The kit is designed to support accurate dosing of the Reef Foundation supplement, which is part of the complete Red Sea reef care program.
